Then a figure from Anna's childhood reappears. Is it a Branch setup, or could it be the reunion Anna has hoped for? Uncertain of where her loyalties lie, Anna must fight to learn the truth -- before she is betrayed again. Ultimately, the answers hinge on one question: What was the real reason her memories were erased?

Shannon's Thoughts:
Erased picks up a couple months after the conclusion of Altered.  Anna and the boys are on the run and hiding out.  Sam is teaching Anna to protect herself.  Meanwhile, Anna is starting to regain some of her erased memory and trying to put all the pieces together to solve the mystery of who she really is.

This book (and series) is the equivalent "popcorn blockbuster" movie.  It isn't an incredibly deep book.  Some questions are answered, some...aren't as much.  And we don't really get any more character development other than maybe a little with Nick.  But you don't go into a popcorn movie for character development, you go in for the explosion.  And there is plenty of that.  Seriously, this book does not stop.  I love how fast paced and action paced it is.  I read it in one day and didn't want to put it down.  I still think I preferred the first book, but I do like how Anna learns to protect herself.  I found some of the situations a bit over the top and some were not explained as well as I would have liked.  But overall, if you want a fun, easy, action packed thrill ride I recommend this series!

Altered by Jennifer Rush [Review]

Altered (Altered, #1)4.5 out of 5 Robots!

Book Summary:
When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Shannon's Thoughts:
Altered was a lot of fun.  Well, actually, I don't know if "fun" is quite right.  More like it was really exciting.  I did not want to put it down. It was a quick paced and action packed on-the-run adventure almost from the start.  I say almost because I felt it started off a little slow.  We get a lot of Anna longing after Sam.  I was really hoping that this "romance" wasn't going to be the focal point of the novel, but luckily my fears were mostly unfounded.  Most of the focus stays on action, which really picks up after the boys make their dramatic escape and all five of them are on the run.  The action doesn't really stop from there as they try to stay one step ahead of The Branch and try to figure out their pasts.

I also really liked each of their characters, including surly Nick, who offers a counterpoint to the other boys.  I love that Anna has a unique relationship with each of them.  I think Cas was probably my favorite.  He is the "funny one" and he definitely lightened up the story.

I will also say that Jennifer Rush definitely lays down some twists that I didn't see coming.  The story took some turns I wasn't expecting and I liked never really knowing what was going to happen. Overall, I really enjoyed this book.  There are probably some parts that will bother some readers, but I think books like this are best read at face value.  Just sit back and enjoy the show.  I will definitely be back for the sequel!
