Book Summary:
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, the dark reimagining of the Persephone myth comes to a thrilling conclusion.

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die

Shannon's Thoughts:
Awaken is the final installment in the Hades/Persephone inspired Abandon series.  It begins in the Underworld, the morning after the events of the previous book.  Pierce has accepted her place as John's consort in the Underworld.  But the Furies are still after them and set off a series of events that have Pierce and John scambling to put things right.

I personally like this series, but I could easily see some people being very frustrated with it.  Pierce has a one track mind: John.  Or maybe John's abs.  John can come across as possessive and over protective.  Although I think he comes off better in this book than the previous ones.  The writing is sometimes...a little bit cheesy.  But there is some fun times to be had too.  The final battle between the Furies and Pierce et al was pretty exciting.  Pierce really comes into her own as she goes to rescue John from being trapped by death.  The ending ties up almost all of the loose ends and wraps things up pretty nicely.  I felt it ended maybe just a little too cleanly, but over all I think this book was on par with the rest of the series.  If you enjoyed the other books in the series, then you will enjoy this one too.

2. Underworld
3. Awaken

Underworld by Meg Cabot [Review]

Book Summary:

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera isn't dead.

Not this time.

But she is being held against her will in the dim, twilit world between heaven and hell, where the spirits of the deceased wait before embarking upon their final journey.

Her captor, John Hayden, claims it's for her own safety. Because not all the departed are dear. Some are so unhappy with where they ended up after leaving the Underworld, they've come back as Furies, intent on vengeance... on the one who sent them there and on the one whom he loves.

But while Pierce might be safe from the Furies in the Underworld, far worse dangers could be lurking for her there... and they might have more to do with its ruler than with his enemies.

And unless Pierce is careful, this time there'll be no escape.

Shannon's Thoughts:
First of all, I have to laugh at the publisher's blurb. It is not a very accurate depiction of Underworld. I don’t really consider Pierce being held against her will. John took her back to the underworld to save her from her grandmother who turned out to be a Fury. It also makes John out to be much more sinister than he really is.  John may be a "bad boy" and at times is not very honest with Pierce, but he is also extremely protective of her and cares deeply for her. He risks everything to help Pierce try to save her cousin after she finds out he is in danger.

I found myself enjoying Underworld even more than the first installment, Abandon. We get a lot more face time with John and begin to understand how he came to be the ruler of the underworld. Plus we get to meet some of the other Underworld denizens, which is a fun and fascinating addition. And Pierce finally starts to come into her own! Although she is still really clueless sometimes (annoyingly so).

Underworld is very action driven, much more than Abandon and I really like that.  I found Abandon to be a little slow at times.  AND I am super excited about the ending!  I can’t wait to read the next book to see it pick up where Underworld left off. Those that found Abandon satisfying will definitely enjoy Underworld

I love these covers. I think the cover for Abandon, the first installment, is beautiful too. I have to say that I favor the blue cover and that I can see more of her dress. What about you? Do you love it?

Book Summary:
Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone . . . because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back.

But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid. Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away . . . especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most.

But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld. (Courtesy of Amazon.com)

My Review:
Abandon by Meg Cabot is strangely romantic and I strongly recommend it to any young adult fan that finds themselves intrigued with the Underworld. Abandon started off slowly, I wasn't into the story until maybe 105 pages in... but then, out of no where, I was completely submerged. I couldn't get enough of Peirce and her unique situation.

I can honestly say that I had no idea where the author was taking the plot. I found myself often pleasantly surprised- which is awesome. Also, Peirce's struggles with getting back to a normal life in a new town were extremely pragmatic. Relationships, conversations- nothing seemed forced or rushed. We get to read Peirce's story both in present format and then flashbacks. Sometimes flashbacks can be tacky, but they really worked for this story. My review isn't doing this story justice, now that I am thinking about the story and writing this review I'm thinking about how much I wish I was reading the book again.

I thought Perice and John were perfect. Peirce is very likeable and easy to relate to and John is intense and mysterious. Their supporting characters were fascinating as well. I can't wait for the sequel to come out! We have awhile though, Underworld drops in 2012. Read this book this summer! It is quick and refreshing, perfect for the beach.
