Sixteen-year-old Riley Meemick is one of the world’s last free girls. As Riley’s affection for Clay grows she wonders can she trust Clay with her secret and risk her freedom? 

The three embark on a journey across the scarred remains of New Mexico– escaping the Riders who use human sacrifice to appease their Good Mother, various men scrambling for luck, and a deranged lone survivor of a plague. When Riley is shot and forced into the Breeder’s hospital, she learns the horrible fate of her mother—a fate she’ll share unless she can find a way out.

In middle school she spent her free time locked in her room, writing her first young adult novel. Though her social life suffered, her love for literature thrived. She studied English at Eastern Michigan University, where she veered from writing and earned an education degree. She spent nine years teaching high school English. 

Currently she is a school counselor, doing a job that is both one of the hardest things she’s ever done and the most rewarding. In her free time she writes, reads great books and takes care of her two beautiful and crazy children. She is a contributor and co-creator of Underground Book Reviews,a website dedicated to erasing the boundaries between traditional and non-traditional publishing. She lives in Michigan with her husband and two children.

Shannon's Review

The Breeders is a quick-paced, action packed book. From page one, I was pulled in. No, seriously, the action starts almost immediately. It is a very tense ride as Riley struggles to keep her brother safe and get out of the Breeder's hospital. Riley is tough as nails, but is smart too. She can't and won't be distracted from her goals, but she also recognizes when she needs help. Things get very tricky for her and then ending is really intense.  

The world Katie French creates is at once recognizable and foreign. There are artifacts left of the world as we know it, but things have devolved into anarchy. This new world is fraught with danger, disease, suffering and death. Katies paints a grim landscape - like the wild west gone horribly wrong. But there are still good people in the world. Ones that want to help Riley. There is a distinctive Western theme that runs through this dystopian, which was kind of fun and changes things up from other dystopians.

I recommend The Breeders for its action, grit, and intensity!
