My Review:
Alright- so we know a review of this book isn't really necessary because it has already gotten RAVING reviews from just about everyone. But I LOVE this book, and I want to add a review for all my favorites (including the rest of the series) so I mustttttt talktalktalk about Jeaniene Frost's "Halfway to the Grave." This is the first installment of the Night Huntress Series. Are you ready to hear me gush?
This is one of the best books I read in 2008. If you love Sookie Stackhouse or Anita Blake then you will love the hell out of this book too. The heroine is brilliant and comes from a small town. Catherine (Cat) Crawfield is partially vampire and partially human. She came to be this way because her mother was raped 22 years ago by a newly turned vampire that still had some "swimmers." Her mother harbors a ridiculous, self-indulged, obsessive grudge against all vampires now. This made growing up with her totally dysfunctional- and Cat always knew she was different from other children. However, not until she was 16 did she find out the horror that resulted in her birth. To help avenge her mother she goes to bars on the weekends and picks up unsuspecting vampires... letting them take her to secluded spots and then staking them.
This goes well- for awhile. Inevitably, she finally picks the wrong vampire. Bones. He is much older than most of the scabs she normally picks off and sets himself up for her only to turn the wheels- or should I say stake? Bones is a vampire assassin and doesn't believe Cat's story at first. When he finally comes to believe her- he realizes that he can train her and use her as an assistant and bait.
Naturally, all goes according to plan for awhile... until their business arrangement becomes full of sexual tension and emotion. Bones falls for Cat pretty quickly but it takes Cat quite some time to come around to the idea of Bones for a lover. After all, can some vampires really not be bad guys? Cat has a lot of hang ups because of what happened to her mother.
The character development is excellent and the pace of the novel is just amazing. The book is written completely from Cat's point of view, but you still get a great look at Bones and his perspective. (I often find books that are written in first person don't give a very good outlook of the other characters... this book does that- Thank You, Jeaniene!!)
This book has a great plot and for her debut book- gosh, you can't get any better than this. This book has so many laugh out loud moments and great quotes. I gotta throw some of these quotes out there...

I will never trade this book in for another- it is a keeper on my bookshelf. I can't wait to read the next few!!
