Plot Summary:
A former Agent of death, Madeline Black now has everything to live for, most importantly, her unborn child. But Chicago has become ground zero in a struggle between ancient creatures, and only Maddy can stop the carnage…

The mayor of Chicago has announced a plan to round up the city’s supernatural beings and put them in camps. With her due date looming, Maddy’s best move would be to lay low for a while. But not everyone is willing to respect her privacy. Hounded by tentacled monsters, a rogue shapeshifter, and a tenacious blogger, Maddy turns to her most powerful ally, her uncle Daharan, only to find him missing.

Just when it seems like things can’t get any worse, Maddy gets an invitation in the mail—to Lucifer’s wedding. Turns out everyone has been invited, friends and enemies alike. And with that kind of guest list, it’s highly unlikely there will be a happily ever after.

An AWESOME Excerpt!
This was even worse than I thought. He was actively seeking out dangerous people in the name of research. Sooner or later he would stumble into a situation that would get him killed. And I would be responsible, because I couldn’t stop him.
Nathaniel looked at me. He understood a fair bit of what passed inside my mind without my saying a word. Ever since I’d released his magical legacy from Puck, there had been a powerful connection between us.
“You’ve warned him,” Nathaniel said. “His fate is in his own hands.”
Daharan nodded. “You cannot save everyone, Madeline.”
Their solemnity penetrated Jack’s bravado in a way my anger had not.
“Nothing’s going to happen to me,” he said defiantly.
“Oh, yes, it is,” I said softly. I could almost see it happening—his capture, his torture, his death. A cloak of darkness seemed to settle over him, the resolute hand of the Reaper on his shoulder. We all felt it. We were attending Jack Dabrowski’s funeral.
“I’m not going to die!” he said angrily, desperately, backing away from me.
Nathaniel moved aside so Jack could free himself from our circle, from the relentless certainty of his death.
He held his hands palms up in front of him, to plead, to defend. “I’m not going to die.”
Jack backed into the fence, fumbled with the gate, stepped into the alley.
“I won’t,” he said before the gate slammed shut and we heard his footsteps running away.
“You will,” I said softly behind him. “Everything dies.”

Interview & Giveaway with Faith Hunter!

Kicking It
Authors:

1. What footwear is your character wearing in Kicking It?
Chris Marie Green: Very hip boots that seem to be made of vines…and that won’t come off. Oh, and she doesn’t remember where she got them. She also can’t remember her own identity!
Lucienne Diver: My character is wearing silver stiletto boots with Plexiglas heels. They are her idea the way the Wicked Witch of the West would embrace dancing in the rain with her flying monkeys.

2. How many pairs of boots do you currently own?
Chris Marie Green: Four pairs: two very comfortable Uggs, one fairly fashionable knee-high brown pair with chunky heels, one well-adored cowboy pair.
Lucienne Diver: I own at least four pairs—black, black thigh-highs, red lace ups and brown suede. I’d know exactly, but since moving to Florida I don’t have as many chances to wear my boots as I’d like!

3. What color is your favorite pair of boots?
Chris Marie Green: Light brown suede (the cowboy boots).
Lucienne Diver: Black. My favorite pair would have to be the thigh highs. I think my husband would agree.

4. What type of boots do you prefer? Cowboy boots? Riding boots? Biker- boots? Over-the-knee dominatrix boots? Do share!
Chris Marie Green: I love, love, love my cowboy boots. I wear them constantly. The poor things are worn out but I Can’t. Let. Go. I can’t! When they finally fall apart, I will cry.
Lucienne Diver: Over the knee dominatrix boots. Come on, admit it, anyone shocked?

5. What’s your most recent boot purchase? Why that pair?
Chris Marie Green: One of the Uggs. They are the most comfortable things, even though they’re kind of considered passé, I guess. But I say comfort never goes out of style!
Lucienne Diver: I most recently bought ankle boots because I was going to an ice bar in Orlando with friends and all I’d brought with me were open toed shoes. Brrr!

6. Why did you choose those boots for the story?
Chris Marie Green: I can’t give too much away because the boots are a part of the story’s mystery, but let’s just say I needed something with a living component to them… Also, I thought they would look super cool.
Lucienne Diver: When you’re going Fembot meets alien queen, what else is a gal to wear?

Julia's Thoughts:
Christina Henry hit another bad ass home run in the sixth installment of her Black Wings series. Black Heart is dark, sexy and full of surprises- any Urban Fantasy lover's dream come true. I COULD NOT put this one down! Christina Henry always knows how to put a fresh spin on her next Maddy Black adventure.

Maddy never slows down in Black Heart, the plot just keeps getting juicier. New villains and old villains show their faces. I almost began to feel bad for Maddy as she never gets a break from the bad guys. It is undeniably entertaining and satisfying to see her kick ass. And not a single character in the Black Wings series has stopped evolving, they all continue to keep you guessing. And in Black Heart Madeline and her gang of misfits will continue to make you laugh, cry and root for them against the impossible. New (awesome!) character alert- Uncle Daharan. I'm not going to delve into his character except that he is fascinating. Read this book so you can experience these characters!!

I love Madeline's courage and her growing confidence in her powers.  Beezle may not like the new Maddy, but I do! I know everyone misses Gabriel- I don't. But Maddy (and Gabriel fans) will get some closure in Black Heart. I could have done without the "closure" because I have been rooting for Nathaniel since Black Night (see here!) and I AM SO EXCITED that it seems Maddy is finally ready to move on and maybe root for Nathaniel with me. He is still a wee bit mysterious, totally bad ass, completely arrogant and delicious. He goes through a lot of changes and I love what his character has become over the course of this series. His interactions with Maddy are so adorable. I reallllllly hope that their relationship continues to grow.

Black Heart is dark, intense and a turning point in the Black Wings series. If you're looking for a sexy, brilliantly witty urban fantasy with toe curling action, dangerous plots and complex characters - read this book. I hope Christina Henry keeps writing many more in the Madeline Black series, I LOVE these characters. I can't wait to see what she throws at Maddy in the next novel and this series will continue to be on my MUST BUY list! So get out there and order this book, it is SO GOOD!

Black Night by Christina Henry [Review]

5 out of 5 Robots!

Black Night by Christina Henry
Series: Madeline Black, #2
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Release: July 26, 2011
Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Ace

Reviewer: Rex
Buy the Book: Amazon

About the Book:
Madeline Black is an Agent of death, meaning she escorts the souls of people who have died to the afterlife. Of course, not everyone is happy to see her...

If obstinate dead people were all that Maddy had to worry about, life would be much easier. But the best-laid plans of Agents and fallen angels often go awry. Deaths are occurring contrary to the natural order, Maddy's being stalked by foes inside and outside of her family, and her two loves- her bodyguard, Gabriel, and her doughnut-loving gargoyle, Beezle-have disappeared. But because Maddy is Lucifer's granddaughter, things are expected of her, things like delicate diplomatic missions to other realms.

My Thoughts:
Madeline Black is back and super badass in her second installment, Black Night. This is one of my absolute favorite Urban Fantasy series- it has it all. Black Night is intensely action packed with characters that have depth and are constantly evolving. They have me either frustrated or laughing out loud. If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy, don't bother reading my thoughts, just go pick up this series!

All of our favorite characters return for Black Night- Maddy, Beezle, Nathaniel, Gabriel and JB. Maddy is still gutsy and Beezle is still snarky. Gabriel doesn't play a huge role in this novel, but Nathaniel and JB are front and center of Maddy's latest adventure. I actually prefer Nathaniel to Gabriel, he is stubborn, domineering and I love his interactions with Maddy. Nathaniel has just grown on me so much, I loved him by the end of this book. Really hoping he is a major focus in the next installment.

If you're looking for a brilliant urban fantasy with page-turning action, witty dialogue and fun characters - this is your book. I hope Christina Henry keeps writing many more in the Madeline Black series, I LOVE her writing style. And I can't wait for Black Howl next year!

CHRISTINA HENRY is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago and enjoys running long distances, reading anything she can get her hands on and watching movies with samurai, zombies and/or subtitles in her spare time. She lives in Chicago with her husband and son.

The Interview:

Hi, Christina! BLACK NIGHT is one of my favorite Urban Fantasy reads this year- Can you tell our readers about what you love most about the Urban Fantasy genre?
I really love the way you can mix up genres in UF - you can have a great mystery, a love story, a paranormal element and a suspense thriller all in the same book. It's a lot of fun for a writer to have no boundaries.

Is there any scene in BLACK NIGHT that you absolutely love and would never cut?
The sequence in the Maze was one of the more challenging scenes to write but I think it's also one of the best in the book. I think you really see Maddy's strengths and her vulnerabilities revealed in a very intimate way.

I didn't like Nathaniel in BLACK WINGS, but now I love him. Will he ever grow on Madeline? Will he continue to be a fixture in the series? (Sorry! I had to ask!)
You'll have to wait until February for BLACK HOWL, unfortunately :)

So I asked once before about a love triangle, but it seems that Madeline has three men gunning for her love now. Any of these guys dropping out of the races in the books to come?
Same as above!

What are five songs we could find on Madeline's favorite playlist?
He Wants You/Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Crossfire/Brandon Flowers
Full of Grace/Sarah McLachlan
Wake Up/Arcade Fire
On Your Own/The Verve

What are three fun facts about Beezle that no one knows?
a) His favorite movie is Bram Stoker's Dracula - the one with Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder. He thinks it's a comedy.
b) When Maddy is not at home he spends almost all his time on Facebook.
c) He loves Katy Perry but would never, ever admit it. He likes to pretend he's a tough gargoyle.

Have you ever considered writing in the Young Adult genre?
I think it takes real skill to walk that fine line and make a YA book appealing to both kids and adults. There are many, many authors that I admire who do it well but I don't think I'm one of them. My books are definitely, as my son says, "for grown-ups".

Are there any other releases or works in progress that you're excited about?
I have a couple of projects that I'd like to work on - one of them is an idea for another series - but since I've committed to writing two Black Wings books this year I probably won't have time to work on them for a while. Hopefully next year I'll have an announcement on that front.

Giveaway & Interview with Author Christina Henry! [Closed]

As an Agent of Death, Madeline Black is responsible for escorting the souls of the dearly departed to the afterlife. It's a 24/7 job with a lousy benefits package.

Maddy's position may come with magical powers and an impressive wingspan, but it doesn't pay the bills. And then there are her infuriating boss, tenant woes, and a cranky, popcorn-loving gargoyle to contend with.

Things start looking up, though, when tall, dark, and handsome Gabriel Angeloscuro agrees to rent the empty apartment in Maddy's building. It's probably just a coincidence that as soon as he moves in demons appear on the front lawn. But when an unholy monster is unleashed upon the streets of Chicago, Maddy discovers powers she never knew she possessed. Powers linked to a family legacy of tarnished halos. Powers that place her directly between the light of Heaven and the fires of Hell...

Hi Christina- Welcome to Rex Robot Reviews- we're excited to have you here! Will you tell us about the inspiration behind Black Wings?
I knew I wanted to write an urban fantasy. I’d tried my hand at writing a thriller years ago but never finished it. I enjoy reading pretty much anything with a paranormal element in it so I wanted to give it a try myself. It started with an idea of writing a book about the Grim Reaper and it kind of snowballed from there.

Can you explain the world building in Black Wings? What is unique about your process?
I really love to write dialogue, and before I had a real concrete idea about the plot I heard Maddy’s voice in my head. Beezle followed pretty quickly after that because I needed to have someone to exchange dialogue with Maddy.

I write chronologically, so I started from the first scene and just kind of let the story unspool from there. I’m usually not too sure about what’s going to happen more than a couple of chapters ahead. This keeps the writing fresh for me, but it also means you run the risk of writing yourself into a corner if something isn’t working. I’ve had to throw out two or three chapters at a time and go back and start over at the last working point.

You’d probably be surprised to find out that a lot of the world-building happened on the fly, like “Would this work? I guess it would!” I’m very type-A in real life but when I write I’m more of a seat-of-your-pants person.

Maddy is one kick-ass, witty heroine. Did she ever challenge you during the writing process?
The biggest problem with Maddy was trying to find that fine line between vulnerability and strength. I hate reading about characters with no weaknesses, which win every battle they’re in and walk away without a scratch, etc. But you also don’t want the character to be whiny and annoying, so I struggled a bit with showing how she’s emotionally affected by the story but still has that core of strength that allows her to survive some pretty harrowing events.

Even though I love Gabriel, I'm partial to Black's supervisor. Is he going to be a bigger character in the books to come? Can we get excited about a love triangle? I'm dieing to find out more about him.
J.B. is definitely going to play a bigger role in the next book. You also get to meet his mother  - he has a cryptic comment about his mom in Black Wings that I never expanded on. His mother is a major player in the world of Black Wings and both J.B. and his mom will be around for the foreseeable future. I can’t tell you too much more than that without giving away some of the twists in the sequel.

Have you considered writing in another paranormal genre? Such as Romance or Young Adult?
I like to read paranormal romance but I don’t think I have the temperament to write it. I like to read about happy endings but I’m not too good at writing them. I enjoy the darkness and uncertainty of the urban fantasy relationship better as a writer. I also like having the opportunity to develop a relationship over the course of several books.

Where is your favorite place to read and write?
My favorite place to write is currently the bagel shop down the street from my apartment, which basically became my second home when I was working on Black Night (the sequel to Black Wings). My 4-year old son goes to preschool for 2 ½ hours every day and the best way for me to maximize my writing time is to go somewhere where there is no wireless Internet connection and no laundry/dishes/unmade beds to distract me.

My favorite place to read is at home on a cold Saturday afternoon (I’m a big fan of autumn and winter weather) with my husband and son out somewhere so that the house is totally quiet. Endless cups of green tea can only make this scenario better. As you can imagine I don’t get too many days like this!

It is going to be absolutely painful waiting for the sequel to Black Wings. Is there *anything* you can tell us about the second novel in the Madeline Black series?
I can tell you that the world will open up some, and that you will be introduced to some new creatures and characters that will become important in Maddy’s world. I can also tell you that her romantic relationships become more instead of less complicated, Beezle eats a lot more doughnuts, and that the ending of the book surprised me when I was writing it, so I hope it surprises you when you read it!

On your website you state that you love movies with samurais and zombies. (Yesss, zombies!) What are some of your favorite zombie flicks?
I am a great devotee of anything that George Romero does, just because I think he’s brilliant and daring – I mean, how awesome (and shocking) is the end of Night of the Living Dead?

Other than Romero I’m partial to funny and offbeat zombie films. Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetary Man) is definitely at the top of the list, as is Andrew Currie’s Fido. And of course, I adored Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland.

28 Days Later is not strictly a zombie film (they are not the living dead, they’re ‘infected’) but I love the atmosphere of this movie. Danny Boyle will just lull you into submission with these long, dreamy sequences (like the one where Cillian Murphy’s character first wakes up in the hospital and wanders around the empty streets of London) and then scares the crap out of you. Can you tell I’m a little bit of a film geek?

What are some of your favorite titles/authors in the Urban Fantasy genre?
Jim Butcher is probably my favorite author working right now. I really admire the way he takes chances with his protagonist, Harry Dresden. Neil Gaiman, Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs and Simon Green are also must-reads for me. He’s not a UF writer, but I also recommend Joe Hill to anyone who likes well-written horror.

Thank you so much for talking with us today, Christina! Are there any parting words you would like to leave with our readers?
Thanks for having me here today, Julia! I hope that all of your readers enjoy Black Wings!

My Review:
Black Wings by Christina Henry is fast paced, action packed and hardcore- breathing new life into the vast genre of Urban Fantasy. I was sucked into Madeline Black's morbid world of death from page one and didn't stop until the book was over. (At which point I was like what!? That's it?! I want mooore!) This is my favorite Urban Fantasy read of the year- an absolutely fabulous debut novel.
Maddy lives in an alternate-Chicago where the Agents of Death have a colossal office. She  has inherited the "agent" title and job from her deceased mother. The agents escort the newly dead to a door that takes them to another world. On top of an intense job- her boss is riding her back, she's got new powers and she is in desperate need of a new tenant. Can she handle all this change at once?

Maddy is majorly kick ass with a sweet vulnerability that makes her likable and easy to relate to. And things are finally turning around for her when a new tenant walks in ready to pay the rent... or so she thought. Everything spins out of control pretty quickly with dead bodies and demons piling up all around her- which only means one thing. It is time to uncover the truth behind her heritage and slaughter some bad guys.

The world Henry created is incredibly believable. The villains are scary bad-asses and the heroine is gutsy. The best part of it all is her best friend/Gargoyle, Beezle. He is snarky, insecure and over protective- absolutely adorable in description. Ah, and before I forget- the sexual tension between our Madeline and Gabriel just spills off the pages.

I highly recommend this novel to anyone that likes Urban Fantasy. Black Wings is intense, dark and full of surprises. I am waiting with great anticipation the next novel in this series, Black Night. Get this book!!!
